Northern Highlands Rural Electrification & Grid Modernization Project

The project took place in a remote mountainous region of Northern Laos, where electricity supply had long been unstable due to aging infrastructure and insufficient grid coverage. In support of the national “Rural Power for All” initiative, the local government collaborated with ABILKEEN to modernize the regional grid and bring reliable power to over 25 villages.

Location:
Luang Namtha Province, Laos
Project Year:
2024
Client Type:
Government-backed rural electrification program
Solution Provided:

Deployment of prefabricated outdoor substations for quick, modular installation

Installation of new 35kV overhead lines and distribution transformers

Integration of SCADA-based remote monitoring and fault detection

Low-voltage distribution network upgrade using weather-resistant cable

On-site civil work, installation, and technical training

Project Outcome:
The modernization project successfully extended power coverage to over 6,000 new households and improved grid stability across the region. Outages were reduced by 80%, while voltage quality was brought in line with national standards. With modular prefabricated substations and remote monitoring in place, future maintenance and expansion became significantly more efficient.
Impact:
The project not only supported local economic development but also enhanced education and healthcare access in remote communities, showcasing the transformative power of smart grid solutions.
