Ghana Northern Region – Rural Grid Modernization Initiative

As part of Ghana’s national electrification strategy, the Northern Region required significant infrastructure upgrades to improve electricity access, safety, and reliability in underserved rural communities. The area faced challenges including frequent outages, low voltage, and outdated pole-mounted distribution systems. To address these issues, the local government collaborated with ABILKEEN to implement a comprehensive grid modernization plan.

Location:
Northern Region, Ghana
Project Year:
2021
Client Type:
Government Utility – Rural Electrification Program
Solution Provided:

Outdoor prefabricated substations for decentralized power distribution

11kV/0.4kV step-down transformers with overload protection

Modular switchgear and smart metering integration

Low-voltage distribution panels with surge protection

Installation of steel tubular poles and insulated cables

On-site construction management and maintenance training

Project Outcome:
The modernization program significantly improved grid reliability and safety across 15 remote villages, reducing outage frequency by over 70%. Voltage regulation was stabilized, minimizing equipment damage for local homes and businesses. The prefabricated substation solution ensured rapid deployment and minimal civil work, supporting a sustainable and scalable model for future rural development projects.
