High Performance Composite jacket arrester for High Voltage Applications

Surge arrester is an overvoltage protector mainly used to protect various electrical equipment (transformers, switches, capacitors, wave blockers, transformers, generators, motors, power cables, etc.) in power systems, railway electrification systems, and communication systems from damage caused by atmospheric overvoltage, operational overvoltage, and power frequency transient overvoltage. It is the foundation of insulation coordination in power systems. The core component (resistor) of metal oxide lightning arrester adopts an advanced formula mainly composed of zinc oxide, which has excellent nonlinear (volt ampere) characteristics.

    Product Overview

    Traditional silicon carbide lightning arresters are plagued by several notable disadvantages that hinder their performance in power systems. One of the key issues is the steep-wave discharge delay, which causes the steep-wave discharge voltage to rise to excessively high levels. This delay in responding to steep-wave surges can leave power equipment vulnerable to damage, as the voltage exceeds the safe operating limits for longer periods. Additionally, these arresters suffer from significant dispersion in operating-wave discharge, meaning the operating-wave discharge voltage varies widely under similar conditions. This inconsistency makes it challenging to ensure reliable protection, as the actual voltage during operation might unexpectedly spike beyond the designed thresholds, putting connected equipment at risk.​

    In sharp contrast, zinc oxide lightning arresters offer a host of advantages that address the shortcomings of their silicon carbide counterparts. They exhibit excellent steep-wave response characteristics, reacting swiftly to steep-wave surges without any extension of the steep-wave voltage. This rapid response ensures that the voltage is clamped down quickly, minimizing the exposure of power equipment to high voltages. During operation, zinc oxide arresters maintain a low residual voltage, which is crucial for protecting sensitive components from excessive electrical stress. Furthermore, they eliminate the problem of discharge dispersion, providing consistent and predictable performance across various operating conditions. These features collectively lead to a substantial improvement in the protection margins for both steep waves and operating waves. In terms of insulation coordination, a critical aspect of power system design, the protection margins for steep waves, lightning waves, and operating waves are nearly identical when using zinc oxide arresters. This uniformity ensures that all types of electrical surges are mitigated effectively, offering the best possible protection for power equipment and enhancing the overall reliability of the power system.
